Kannur: The replacement of a plaque bearing the name of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy with a new one featuring Tourism Minister P A Muhammed Riyas has sparked a major controversy in Kannur.
The original plaque, installed to mark the inauguration of the Children's Park and seaside walkway at Payyambalam on May 15, 2015, by Oommen Chandy, has now been replaced with a new one. The new plaque states that Minister Riyas inaugurated the restored park and walkway on March 6, 2022.
District Congress Committee (DCC) president Martin George alleged that the original plaque was found discarded in a trash bin with a broom propped against it- an act he described as a grave insult to the late Congress leader. The incident has triggered widespread protests from Congress workers and supporters. Martin has filed a formal complaint with Tourism Secretary K Biju, demanding an inquiry and appropriate action.
Meanwhile, Congress workers retrieved the discarded plaque and placed it prominently at the main entrance of the children's park. Martin warned of strong protests if the plaque is removed again or relocated.
