Malappuram: Muhammad Shamil of Vellila Chalakkathodi, who became the pride of his village by rescuing three young girls from drowning in a pond at Mankada, has been honoured by the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Team.

Malappuram Station Officer E K Abdul Saleem presented the memento to Shamil in recognition of his bravery. Perinthalmanna Station Officer C Baburaj, Home Guard Venugopal, District Civil Defence Warden Anoop Vellila, Malappuram Station Post Warden Prasad, Perinthalmanna Post Warden C Shihabuddin and Civil Defence members Muhammad Ambalakuth, Naseemul Haq Vadakkangara and Pradeesh Noorankunnath were also present at the event.

According to Civil Defence Team member Samad Parachikkottil, Muhammad Shamil, a Plus Two student at PTM Higher Secondary School, Vellila, was able to carry out the rescue and administer first aid thanks to the emergency response training he received at school.
