With a mind stronger than her body, 38-year-old Jyothilakshmi is proving that determination can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Despite living with congenital muscular dystrophy, which limits her muscle control, she is steadily advancing in her pursuit of education.

A resident of Karimulackal Thundu, Jyothilakshmi is currently writing her Plus Two examinations in the humanities stream under the Continuous Education Programme. Her exam centre is at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kayamkulam. She has already completed three papers, with three more to go.

Though she cannot walk or move without assistance, Jyothilakshmi writes by gripping the pen between her fingers, her sheer willpower and focused mind guiding every word. She had cleared her SSLC (Class 10) with flying colours through the same programme nearly two decades ago. However, worsening health and her mother Vijayamma's need to work to support the family forced her to put her educational dreams on hold.

Today, that dream is being revived. Filled with renewed hope and determination, Jyothilakshmi now plans to pursue graduation as well.

Her biggest pillar of strength is her mother, a retired teacher who cares for her and supports her studies. Jyothilakshmi lost her father, Surendran Pillai, at the age of six. Her sister also continues to stand by her side.
