In view of continued heavy rain and strong winds, all educational institutions in Idukki and Ernakulam districts have been declared a holiday on Friday. In Kottayam, the district collector announced a holiday for three taluks- Kottayam, Meenachil, and Kanjirappally.
The holiday applies to all schools, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, training institutes, and Kendriya Vidyalayas, including residential institutions. However, previously scheduled examinations will be conducted as planned.
The decision was made to prevent potential accidents amid adverse weather conditions. Heads of institutions have been instructed to compensate for the lost academic time through alternative arrangements, including online classes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared an orange alert, predicting heavy rainfall in six districts on Friday- Kottayam, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kollam. A yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts. An orange alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert suggests possible rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 12 cm.
