Kottayam: A hospital in memory of Dr Vandana Das, who was stabbed to death while on duty, will open next month in her hometown, Kaduthuruthy. The facility will offer free treatment to underprivileged patients, fulfilling her lifelong dream of helping those in need. This initiative is spearheaded by her parents, K G Mohandas and Vasantha Kumari, who plan to expand their charitable efforts with additional health centres.
This will be the second hospital established in Dr Vandana’s name, with the first launched earlier this year in her mother’s birthplace, Thrikkunnapuzha, Alappuzha. Additionally, her parents are planning to establish a third hospital in Kuruppanthara, near the Kottayam–Ernakulam road, which will provide inpatient services. To fund these initiatives, a charitable trust in Dr Vandana’s name has been created, with the parents pledging their entire wealth to the cause. The trust, which will also support education for students, is backed by prominent figures such as Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Central Minister Suresh Gopi.
Dr Vandana’s death occurred on May 10, 2023, when she was attacked by a drug addict while on duty as a house surgeon at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in Kollam.
