Iritty: The dispute over the installation of a transformer that threatened to block access to a long-standing commercial establishment in Iritty town has been resolved following the intervention of the municipality.
The issue arose when work began to install a transformer with supporting pillars and materials directly in front of Sree Agencies, a business operating along the busy inter-state road. The placement of the transformer would have completely obstructed the entrance to the shop, sparking protests.
According to municipal officials, an agreement was reached after discussions with the shop owner and the local traders’ association. As per the resolution, the transformer will remain in the planned location, but the roadside vendors currently occupying space in front of the shop will be relocated. A new access path too will be created to ensure unhindered entry to the establishment.
The transformer is being installed to address the persistent voltage fluctuations in Iritty. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) officials clarified that the current location was chosen due to practical difficulties in setting it up at the previously identified site.
At the current spot, two roadside vendors operate on either side of the road. With the installation of protective grills around the transformer, access to Sree Agencies was completely blocked.
On July 20, the shop owner staged a protest against the move and was taken into custody by police from the site.
Based on a formal complaint, Iritty Municipal Chairperson K. Sreelatha, along with KSEB officials, held conciliatory talks with the shop owner and representatives of the traders’ association. The matter was resolved amicably, bringing an end to the dispute.
