Veliyankode: The turbulent sea has broken the barriers and flooded homes at Palapetti and Veliyankode due to heavy downpour. Two houses on the beach were damaged while several others were flooded with seawater. The homes of Vadakkoot Moideen and Karuppamveetil Sulaiman were flooded when the sea got rough yesterday morning.
Houses that were situated at least 15 metres away from the shore were damaged after the sea breached the protective walls. Around ten nearby homes too were battered by the sea water. Meanwhile, the sea has been severely turbulent in Thannithura and Pathumuri areas in Velianode panchayat.
Families whose houses were damaged or flooded moved to their relatives’ homes. The coastal residents say that more than 100 families are on the verge of dislocation due to the turbulent sea. Besides, people have been protesting for not rebuilding the sea wall that was destroyed.
League threatens protest
The leaders of the Muslim League visited the Veliankode beach where the turbulent sea has destroyed several homes. A team led by the Muslim League Ponnani constituency president PP Yousaffali visited Pathumuri and Tannithura beaches in the Veliangode panchayat.
The leaders said that the sea wall hasn’t been rebuilt in the area despite having a CPM MLA for over two decades. They even threatened protest marches if necessary action is not taken to rebuild the sea wall as soon as possible.
