Idukki: A rubber tapper was tragically killed in an elephant attack near Peruvanthanam, located along the Idukki–Kottayam district border. The deceased has been identified as Purushothaman (64), a native of Thambalakkad in Kanjirappally.

The incident occurred around 10:30 am at the Kondody estate in the Mathamba region of Peruvanthanam panchayat. Purushothaman, who was engaged in rubber tapping on leased land, was attacked while working alongside his son.

The elephant first charged toward his son, who managed to escape by running. Immediately after, the elephant turned on Purushothaman, inflicting serious injuries. Though locals rushed him to a private hospital in Mundakayam, he could not be saved.

His body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination.

Locals say wild elephant threats have been escalating in the forest-border areas of Mathamba. The menace has been particularly intense for the past week. Despite repeated complaints to the Erumeli Range Officer, no effective action was taken, residents alleged.
