Thiruvananthapuram: Protesting the arrest of two Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will stage demonstrations across all 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala on Sunday and Monday.
Announcing the statewide protest, CPM state secretary MV Govindan accused the RSS and BJP of pushing their political agenda through the action against the nuns.
“BJP leaders are visiting churches in Kerala while minority communities are being attacked by Hindutva forces in BJP-ruled states,” said Govindan.
He also highlighted the role of RSS politics in violence-hit Assam and Manipur. Meanwhile, he criticised the Congress for not speaking out against the BJP’s Hindutva politics and the violence faced by minority communities.
Simultaneously, churches across the state have intensified their protests demanding justice for the jailed nuns. In many areas, nuns and priests were seen marching through the streets with their mouths covered by black cloths in symbolic demonstrations.
Nuns Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, both from Kerala, along with Sukhman Mandavi, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Durg railway station on July 25. The arrest followed a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three women from the tribal-dominated Narayanpur district and trafficking them.
A sessions court in Durg on Wednesday ruled that it did not have jurisdiction to hear the bail applications of the three accused, who must instead seek relief from a special NIA court.
On Friday, the NIA court reserved its judgment on the bail pleas after the public prosecutor objected to granting bail to the nuns.
