Thiruvananthapuram: Monsoon showers will intensify across Kerala due to the cyclonic circulation over South Tamil Nadu and Mannar Coast. According to the India Meteorological Department, light to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is expected in the state till August 6. The Met Office has sounded yellow and orange alerts in several districts in view of the forecast.

According to the IMD alert at 9 pm on Saturday, heavy rainfall will hit Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod on Saturday. A yellow alert indicating rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours is sounded for these districts. Meanwhile, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts are placed under orange alert on Sunday. An orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Ban on fishing
The Met Department has issued a warning for the fisherfolk asking them to avoid venturing into the sea off Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on August 2, 4 and 6. According to the IMD forecast, strong winds with speed reaching upto 40-60 kmph are expected in Kerala-Karanataka coasts on August 4 and 6.

Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a public advisory asking people to exercise extreme caution as there are chances for strong winds reaching up to 40-50 kmph till August 6.

The safety guidelines are as follows: 

  • Avoid Trees & weak structures: Do not stand under trees or park vehicles beneath them during wind and rain. Trim dangerous branches around your home.
  • Secure loose items: Tie down or remove objects like signboards, poles, or sheets that could fall or fly away.
  • Stay Indoors: Close doors and windows during strong winds. Stay away from them and avoid rooftops.
  • Relocate If Needed: If staying in weak or temporary structures (like tiled or sheet-roof houses), shift to safer buildings as advised by authorities.
  • Report hazards: Inform local authorities if you notice dangerous trees or damaged electric poles.
  • Electric safety: Stay away from fallen power lines. Report to KSEB (1912) or the District Disaster Control Room (1077). Don’t attempt repairs yourself.
  • Early morning workers: Delivery workers and others should be cautious. Check for waterlogged areas with possible fallen wires before proceeding.
  • Farm safety: Ensure electric lines passing through farms are safe before entering fields.
  • Construction work: Stop all construction work during strong winds and move to a safe location.
