Thrissur: Lok Sabha MP and CPM leader K Radhakrishnan criticised veteran Malayalam filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for his remarks against aspiring directors from SC/ST communities, stating that the renowned director is promoting an outdated feudal mindset in society. Radhakrishnan said that such a statement was not expected from someone of Adoor's stature.

 “I fear people might soon demand the cancellation of reservations for SC/ST communities. The government provides financial aid and reservations to Dalits for their upliftment. A capital fund is essential to encourage women and SC/ST filmmakers. Based on this need, the government has allocated ₹1.5 crore for such filmmakers. Adoor’s criticism of this initiative was disappointing, especially from a director who once portrayed the lives of the marginalised in his films,” he said.

 Meanwhile, Minister V N Vasavan defended Adoor, arguing that his remarks were misinterpreted. He added that the government would ensure justice for all deserving individuals. However, Higher Education Minister R Bindu criticised Adoor, stating there is nothing wrong in offering financial aid to women and SC/ST filmmakers.

While addressing the film conclave in Thiruvananthapuram, Adoor criticised the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) for providing ₹1.5 crore in funding to aspiring filmmakers from SC/ST communities. He stated that such individuals should first undergo proper training by experts before receiving financial support. Dinu Veyil, a dalit activist, has filed a complaint with police and the SC/ST Commission seeking action against the national award-winning director for insulting people belonging to the marginalised sections.
