Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil announced that the government will distribute 2 litres of coconut oil per ration card through Supplyco outlets at subsidised rate ahead of the Onam festival. The move comes in response to the soaring prices of coconuts and coconut oil across the state.
In August, coconut oil will be sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 349 per litre through Supplyco stores. The same cardholder can purchase it till September 4. From September 5 onwards, the Onam sale of subsidised products will commence. Two-litre oil will be supplied to each ration card holder at a subsidised price,” said Minister Anil.
On Saturday, Agriculture Minister G Prasad said that Supplyco is planning to sell coconut oil at reduced rates following an agreement with the Kerala State Co-operative Apex Federation of Coconut Farmers Ltd (Kerafed). Minister Anil also expressed hope that coconut oil prices would come down soon. According to him, traders who met with Industries Minister P Rajeeve assured the government they would try to sell coconut oil at lower prices.
Supplyco is also considering issuing a tender to procure coconut oil at lower rates.
Coconut oil has become unaffordable for the commoner, with prices surpassing ₹500 per litre last week. In the retail market, popular brands like Kerafed, KLF Nirmal, and KLF Coconad have raised prices. A one-litre pack of Kerafed coconut oil is now priced at ₹529, while KLF Coconad stands at ₹590. The cost of virgin coconut oil from some brands has crossed ₹600.
Meanwhile, the state government has also decided to crack down on the sale of adulterated oil and other food products in the market.
