Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has predicted that isolated places across Kerala are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall till July 7. A red alert is sounded for Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts on Tuesday, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad and Malappuram districts are placed under orange alert. A yellow alert is issued for all other districts.

“Strong Surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala and Lakshadweep from 3rd to 7th August 2025. Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours) with extremely heavy rainfall (> 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 5th August, Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 3rd,4th,6th & 7th August and Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 8th and 9th August and over Lakshadweep from 3rd to 6th August 2025,” reads the IMD alert.

According to the Met Department, monsoon rain will intensify in Kerala under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu coast. Observing the chances of incessant rains, the Central Water Commission has sounded a yellow alert for three rivers- Muvattupuzha (Ernakulam), Achankovil (Pathanamthitta) and Thodupuhza (Idukki).

Fishing banned along Kerala coast, ‘Kallakkadal’ warning in place
Swell waves known as ‘Kallakkadal’ will trigger high tidal waves along the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha from 5.30 pm on Sunday to 8.30 pm on Monday, alerted the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

These areas are likely to experience waves of up to 1.5 to 1.8 metres during this period. Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the possibility of sea incursion.

The India Meteorological Department has restricted fisherfolk from venturing into the sea along Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshawdeep coasts till August 7 in view of the adverse weather conditions.
