The state government has decided to consitute an expert panel to do away with seating students in back benches in classrooms. Minister for General Education V Sivankutty said that the government plans to eliminate the concept of 'backbenchers' since it affects the confidence and academic perception of students.

"No student shall feel isolated or left behind in class rooms. Every student needs to be given equal opportunity. The government is mulling ways how to make it practical. Many countries follow practices to dispel the concept of backbenchers. An expert committee will be constituted to arrive at a model which will give the best model suited to our state. The recommendations of the committee will be considered and a decision will be taken," the Minister said.

Recently, some of the schools in the state, inspired by a Malayalam movie 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan' introduced U-shaped classrooms which will have teachers at the centre and every student will get equal attention. The move was hailed for promoting inclusivity in schools.
