Varkala: For the first time in Kerala, a plant that generates electricity by scientifically processing household biomedical and sanitary waste is set to begin operations in Varkala.
The facility, with a capacity to treat five tonnes of waste per day, will produce up to 60 kilowatts of electricity daily. Local Self-Government Minister M B Rajesh will inaugurate the unit on the evening of August 12.
Established by the Varkala Municipality with technical approval from the State Pollution Control Board, the plant will handle waste such as biomedical diapers, sanitary pads, reusable cloth, hair, and condoms.
It is located in the Kanwashramam area, alongside an existing waste treatment facility. The project, which cost approximately Rs. 1.5 crore to construct, marks a significant step in sustainable waste management for the state.
