Paravoor: Koravanparambil Chandrika (60) has been rendered homeless after the Chittatukara panchayat authorities told her she was ineligible for a house under the LIFE Mission project. The authorities claim that houses cannot be allotted to persons living alone.

The old house on three cents of land owned by Chandrika in the fourth ward of the panchayat was destroyed in the strong winds and heavy rains of August 2024. Chandrika survived only because she had been admitted to hospital at the time, seeking treatment for a back injury.

Her husband Babu had submitted an application for a house under the LIFE project at Chittatukara panchayat before their house collapsed in the rain. However, Babu passed away later; the couple had no children. Chandrika has since been visiting the panchayat office, requesting the authorities to allot her a house under the scheme.

At present, Chandrika lives at the homes of relatives and neighbours as she has nowhere of her own to stay. Despite holding an Antyodaya Anna Yojana card, she continues to pay electricity and water bills. Her only wish is for a small one-room house to live in.

However, panchayat president Shanitini Gopakumar says that guidelines under the LIFE project prevent granting houses to persons without legal heirs.
