The Congress leadership in Thrissur on Tuesday formally lodged a complaint against MP Suresh Gopi, alleging that the BJP leader submitted false information in his affidavit ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The complaint was submitted to the office of the Thrissur City Police Commissioner. Speaking to reporters after filing the complaint, Congress leader T N Prathapan said Suresh Gopi had falsely claimed in the affidavit that he and his family had been residing in Thrissur for six months prior to the elections.
"What he said is a lie. He was not living here," Prathapan alleged. "As per the rules, a voter must reside in the constituency for at least six months before the election to be included in the voters' list. However, Suresh Gopi was not present in Thrissur during that period and has submitted false information to the Election Commission," he claimed.
He added that a criminal complaint has been filed against the actor-turned-politician. Prathapan also noted that the Congress had earlier raised the issue with the Election Commission, but no action was taken.
Suresh Gopi won the Thrissur seat by a significant margin of over 74,000 votes, defeating CPI's V S Sunil Kumar and Congress candidate K Muraleedharan in a closely fought three-cornered contest during the 2024 general election.
