Vypin: The people of the coast were in for a surprise when they spotted the iconic great hornbill, a bird usually seen only in the mountains. A great hornbill was seen perched on a date palm near Sajeevan’s house in Nayarambalam.

Although Vypin is a hub for countless migratory birds, this is the first time a great hornbill has been spotted here. Besides the public, birdwatchers have also gathered in Vypin to catch a glimpse of the hornbill.

Meanwhile, noted birdwatcher and photographer Sharat Manjanad said that it is quite rare to spot a single hornbill, as they are usually seen in pairs. The male hornbill is believed to have flown from Vazhachal, Nelliyampathy, or Athirappilly, as these areas are natural habitats of the species. Hornbills typically fly continuously for one or two kilometres before resting for a while and then continuing their journey.
