Kerala is likely to experience rain or thundershowers until August 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. Nine districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Kannur — were placed under a yellow alert for Friday, with heavy rainfall expected between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued a warning at 6 pm on Friday, forecasting moderate to intense rain and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. An orange alert was declared in these districts for the next three hours (till 9 pm).

Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Saturday due to the ongoing heavy rain. The order covers CBSE, ICSE, Kendriya Vidyalayas, anganwadis, madrasas, and tuition centres in the district. However, examinations and interviews scheduled earlier will be held as planned.

The IMD has also warned of squally weather with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts until August 28. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in these areas during this period.
