The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala on Friday, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds. The districts are Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. According to the IMD forecast, isolated places across the state are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm in 24 hours between August 14 and 18. In some areas, rainfall may intensify further, with very heavy (12–20 cm) to extremely heavy showers (over 20 cm) expected on Friday and Saturday.
In addition to the rainfall warning, strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely to prevail across Kerala from August 14 to 16, potentially impacting coastal and low-lying regions.
The IMD has cautioned about a range of possible impacts, including poor visibility, traffic congestion, uprooted trees, disruptions to power supply, and damage to vulnerable structures. There is also a heightened risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall. Agricultural activities may be affected, with potential damage to standing crops and challenges for farmers in newly sown fields.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone zones, and strictly follow safety advisories. Farmers are encouraged to delay sowing, use mulching to protect soil and roots, and ensure adequate drainage in their fields. Meanwhile, fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea during this period due to rough weather and high wind speeds.
