Pathanamthitta: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday appointed Chittayam Gopakumar as the party's secretary in Pathanamthitta district. He is currently a member of the party's national council.

Gopakumar has been serving as the MLA from Adoor since 2011 and is currently the deputy speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

The CPI has also inducted A P Jayan into the district committee.

Chittayam started his political career through the All India Students Federation (AISF) and slowly rose through the organisation's ranks. He also served as the state council member of CPI. He was also the party's former Kollam district president.
