Thrissur: Goods movement at the busy Ariyangadi market in Thrissur came to a standstill for several hours on Friday following a dispute over the revised freight rates.

The issue erupted after the Corporation’s contractor arrived with a court order on revised freight rates. Truck owners refused to accept the new rates, bringing unloading and transportation of goods to a complete halt.

East Police rushed to the spot and attempted to mediate, but failed initially. Later, after a round of talks involving the police, Corporation officials, truck owners, and traders, it was agreed that the matter would be discussed in detail. Following this assurance, goods movement resumed by noon.

Earlier, a 16-wheel truck was charged only ₹140, but under the revised rates, the amount increased to ₹649. Similarly, for a 12-wheel truck, the rate went up from ₹80 to ₹265. The steep hike in vehicle fees triggered the dispute.
