Kerala rain: Holiday for schools in Palakkad on Tuesday, colleges exempted

Palakkad: The District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Palakkad on Tuesday. The holiday is applicable for CBSE, ICSE, anganwadis, nurseries, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, and madrasas. However, professional colleges will continue to work. All examinations will be conducted as scheduled.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for three districts on Monday and Tuesday, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in several areas. The districts are Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Additionally, a yellow alert has also been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode on Tuesday.

Squally weather, with wind speeds ranging from 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, is likely to prevail along and off the Kerala coast.
Probable impacts due to rain
- Visibility may become poor due to an intense spell of rainfall, leading to traffic congestion.
- Temporary Disruption of traffic due to waterlogging in roads/ uprooting of trees/ breaking of tree branches, leading to increased travel time.
- Uprooting of trees may cause damage to the power sector
- Possibility of damage to vulnerable structures due to heavy to very heavy rainfall
- Partial damage to kutcha houses and huts due to the uprooting of trees.
- Possibilities of flash floods due to an intense spell of rainfall.
- Waterlogging/flooding in many parts of low-lying areas.
- Landslides/mudslides/landslips are very likely.
- Heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage.
- Lightning may injure people and cattle in open places.
- Dispersion of soil from the field, hence seed displacement, and poor germination of seeds.
