IMD revises rain forecast for Kerala, orange alert in 3 districts, yellow in 8

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds continued to batter various parts of Kerala under the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts and a yellow alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Monday.
Though no alert has been issued for Thrissur district, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions on Monday in view of the adverse weather conditions. District Collector Arjun Pandyan announced that the quarterly examinations in schools, which were scheduled to commence on Monday, will be postponed. The revised date will be announced later.

Aug 18 – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode
Aug 19 – Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode
Aug 20 – Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into the sea off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts till Tuesday. According to the alert, strong winds with speeds reaching up to 55 kmph are likely to prevail over the Arabian Sea on Tuesday.
Shutters of several dams were opened as water levels continued to rise in the catchment areas. A yellow alert has been issued for the Achankovil, Manimala, and Chalakkudy rivers in view of the incessant rainfall. People have been restricted from entering the rivers, and those residing close to the banks have been advised to exercise extreme caution.
