Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Secretary M V Govindan on Thursday accused the BJP-led central government of taking “a step towards fascist rule” by introducing the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking to the media, Govindan said the bill represents a complete rejection of democratic values and is designed to "target political opponents." “With this bill, any political opponent can be jailed on false charges for a month, leading to disqualification from their post. Such a move is unprecedented in our democracy,” he said.
He further alleged that the Centre has routinely used investigative agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax Department, and the CBI to harass opposition leaders.
Govindan also condemned the BJP’s alleged actions against senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar, calling it a violation of press freedom. “They are being targeted for not endorsing the BJP’s narrative on key national issues,” he said.
On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three Bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which allows the removal of prime ministers, chief ministers, and ministers arrested for serious criminal charges and held in custody for 30 days. The move has sparked sharp protests from opposition parties.
