Peermade: The mortal remains of Peermade MLA and CPI State Council member Vazhoor Soman, who passed away on Thursday, were brought to his hometown around 1.30 am on Friday.

The body was first kept at the AITUC office in Peermade for public homage. The office, central to his five-decade-long public life, served as a symbolic venue for the public to pay their last respects.

A large crowd, including plantation workers, waited through the early hours to bid farewell to their beloved leader. Later in the morning, the body was taken to his residence, and by 11 am, it was shifted to the Vandiperiyar Community Hall for public homage.

People from across the region thronged the venue to offer their respects. By 3 pm, the body will be taken to Pampanar, where the final rites will be held near the memorial hut of early Communist leader SK Anandan, as per Soman’s last wish.

Vazhur Soman is survived by his wife Bindu Soman, sons Adv Sobin Soman (CPI Idukki District Council member) and Sobith Soman (Mathrubhumi, Kozhikode), and daughter-in-law Poojitha.
