Wayanad: The Meenangadi panchayat in Wayanad will set up solar plants and windmills to provide uninterrupted power to 24 houses at Sabarmati Nagar. The buildings were constructed under the Kerala government's Life Mission housing scheme.

The project, implemented with the support of ANERT (Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology), NABARD, and Sulthan Bathery-based NGO Shreyas, has been allotted ₹10.4 lakh for a 500-watt power unit. It includes three wind turbines, 15 solar panels, and related systems. Excess power, if generated, will be supplied to the KSEB grid, said Meenangadi panchayat president K E Vinayan.

The project follows a collective housing model for 24 landless tribal families. The total cost is ₹1.44 crore, with each house built at ₹6 lakh. The panchayat purchased 1.21 acres of land in 2020 for ₹21 lakh, allocating one acre for housing, 17 cents for roads, and the rest for common facilities like library, reading room and computer and television units.

Each house is equipped with two bedrooms, a sit-out, a dining hall, a kitchen, a toilet, and a water tank. Water supply is ensured through the Jal Jeevan Mission, along with a common well and waste management facilities supported by MGNREGS.

The houses are expected to be handed over to beneficiaries in September.
