Thiruvananthapuram: A woman panchayat member from Thiruvananthapuram, Sreeja S, was found dead at her home in Aryanad on Tuesday. She was a member of the Kottakkakam ward of the Aryanad grama panchayat.
Sreeja was found by her daughter around 6.30 am inside a rubber shed on their house premises. She had reportedly consumed acid. Though she was rushed to a nearby hospital, Sreeja could not be saved, said ward member KK Ratheesh.
Local representatives said Sreeja had been facing financial difficulties. “She had attempted suicide a month ago and was admitted to the ICU. Even then, it was due to financial issues,” ward member Athira J said.
A team of officials is at the scene, and an investigation is ongoing, said an officer from Aryanad Police Station.
Sreeja is survived by her husband, a daily wage worker, and two daughters.
Congress workers have alleged that CPM members staged a protest against Sreeja on Monday, which pushed her into distress. Following her death, Congress workers have launched protests in Aryanad, leading to tensions in the area.
