Aluva: Demands have been raised to reopen the ‘Santhitheeram’ crematorium at Choornikkara panchayat in Ernakulam district, which was shut three months ago, forcing residents to depend on Kalamassery or Eloor municipalities to cremate their deceased relatives. The situation has caused untold misery to the common people.
Earlier, Santhitheeram had both firewood and gas facilities for cremation. The firewood facility was stopped three months ago after the bricks in the area fell off, while the gas unit was damaged in the massive floods of 2018 and has never been repaired. Incidentally, even though funds were allotted for the gas crematorium’s repair, the work is yet to begin.
Meanwhile, BJP activists staged a protest at the office of the panchayat secretary on Wednesday, demanding urgent measures to reopen the crematorium. The party’s mandalam president, Gopu Krishnan, panchayat member Ramanan Chelakkunnu, A S Salimon, Somasekharan Kallingal, P C Reji and Rajesh Kunnathery led the protest.
