Thiruvananthapuram: With Onam around the corner, Keralites are worried that the heavy rain might have overshadow the celebrations. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state is likely to receive rainfall until September 5, the Thiruvonam day.

A yellow alert has been issued for seven districts on Saturday — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Reports suggest that southern Kerala has been experiencing heavy downpour since Saturday morning.

“Heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on August 30, and on September 3, 4, and 5,” the IMD alert said.

The department also warned of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 30 kmph.

If the rain persists, it could affect Onam celebrations across the state. Schools were closed for Onam holidays on Friday. Heavy showers are expected to worsen traffic congestion, especially as roadworks are underway in several areas. Currently, traffic curbs are in place at Thamarassery ghat road following a mudslide at the 9th curve in Lakkidi.

Onam is a major festival that greatly benefits Kerala’s tourism sector, and there are concerns that the monsoon rains could dampen the celebrations.
