Thiruvananthapuram: A fast-track special court (POCSO) in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday sentenced a man from Maranalloor to 55 years in prison for raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter. Special Judge Anju Meera Birla also imposed a fine of ₹40,000. If he fails to pay, he will face an additional two years and four months in jail.

The crimes took place between 2019 and 2020 after the accused, Anish, married the girl’s mother. He took the child to Nagercoil, Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram, where he repeatedly assaulted her. He also coerced her into accompanying him for drug smuggling. Although the girl tried to alert her father, she was caught and beaten. Later, unable to bear the torture, she confided in relatives despite death threats from the accused. Anish is also an accused in a murder case.

Special Public Prosecutor Vijay Mohan RS represented the prosecution. The investigation was led by Poojappura Inspector Vincent M S Das and R Roj.
