A Congress leader in Thiruvananthapuram has filed a complaint with the state police chief and the city police commissioner seeking a probe against CPM MLA and former minister Kadakampally Surendran over allegations of sexual misconduct levelled by Swapna Suresh, the key accused in the gold smuggling case and a former employee of the UAE consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.
M Muneer, the former president of Pothencode block panchayat, filed the complaint on August 29, two days after the Crime Branch booked Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil for stalking and criminal intimidation.
The complaint is based on allegations raised by Swapna Suresh during television interviews. Muneer said in his complaint that the allegations were of a serious nature, but the police did not take any action then. According to the complaint, which quotes Swapna's statements, Kadakampally allegedly sent her text messages of a lewd nature. It also mentions a voice clip in which Kadakampally allegedly talks in an inappropriate manner to a woman.
Muneer said that the women referred to in the complaint should be contacted and their statements collected for the investigation. "The Chief Minister has said that even if the survivors can't approach cops, the police will file cases based on complaints. So a case shall be charged against Kadakampally Surendran," he said.
The Congress had in 2022 demanded a police probe into complaints raised by Swapna Suresh against three CPM leaders, which also included Kadakampally. The Congress had then accused the state government of exhibiting double standards as a case was registered against Congress MLA Eldose Kunnapillil.
