Thamarassery Ghat road reopens for trucks, only single lane traffic allowed

Kalpetta: Movement of heavy multi-axle trucks will be allowed through the Thamarassery Ghat Road from Sunday onwards, Kozhikode District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh announced in a press release. The trucks will be permitted only in a single lane, and that too at intervals, to ensure passenger traffic is not disrupted.
Traffic on the ghat road was completely banned after a massive mudslide at the 9th Curve near Wayanad Gate, the entry point to Wayanad district, on August 26. Although the road was later reopened for single-lane traffic, trucks remained banned after another mudslide was reported along the stretch of National Highway 766.
Authorities lifted the ban on heavy trucks after assessing the current condition of the ghat road. Officials also reviewed the successful trial of allowing trucks in single-lane intervals before giving the green signal. However, the release noted that if rainfall intensifies, stricter restrictions will be reimposed.
Tourist ban at View Point to continue
Restrictions for tourists at the Thamarassery Ghat Road View Point will remain in place, and no vehicles will be allowed to park there, the release further stated. Tourists are prohibited from stopping vehicles at the spot to take selfies until further notice. Police have been instructed to take strict action against violators.
Meanwhile, police and revenue officials have strengthened surveillance at both entry points of the Wayanad Ghat—Adivaram in Kozhikode and Lakkidy in Wayanad. The heightened vigil will continue for at least a week, coinciding with the ongoing Onam holidays, even if rainfall subsides.
