Alappuzha: A mahout was killed and another injured after an elephant displaying signs of musth attacked them on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Muraleedharan Nair (53), a native of Thengamam. The injured mahout, Sunilkumar (40) of Perunad, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvalla.
The incident occurred when Skandan, the elephant at Haripad Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, became violent. Earlier in the day, Skandan had been released by his mahouts, Pradeep and Sunilkumar, and taken to a nearby farm for fodder. There, the elephant attacked Sunilkumar, throwing him off and goring him in the stomach.
Although the animal was initially subdued and moved to the temple enclosure, it turned aggressive again while being taken along the road near the farm. This time, Muraleedharan Nair, who was seated on the elephant, was thrown off and fatally gored. He succumbed to his injuries around 11.30 pm at a private hospital in Parumala. The elephant squad was called in, and the animal was tranquilised and restrained after several hours.
A police team is at the site and inquest procedures are underway, said an officer from Haripad Police Station.
