Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University's interim registrar, Mini Kappen, has taken an extended leave of absence. The leave has been sanctioned, and Kariavattom campus joint registrar Dr Resmi R will take over the additional charge of registrar, Vice Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummel confirmed to Onmanorama on Tuesday..

The decision was made at Tuesday’s syndicate meeting, which remained largely peaceful. The syndicate also approved the award of PhD degrees to 63 scholars. Dr Kunnummel also clarified that the suspension of former registrar Dr KS Anil Kumar will not be revoked.

The university has been facing an administrative crisis since Dr Kunnummel suspended Anil Kumar over the controversy surrounding the display of an RSS-linked Bharat Mata image at an event attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Though the syndicate later revoked the suspension, then interim vice chancellor Dr Ciza Thomas opposed the move, arguing that the meeting continued after she had dispersed it and walked out. She subsequently appointed Mini Kappen as interim registrar.
