Vice Chancellor V P Mahadevan Pillai who had earlier resisted the Governor’s direction regarding the same relented after the Raj Bhavan decided to initiate action against him.
The VC has informed the Raj Bhavan there is no point in convening a meeting again as the last Senate meeting had passed a resolution against the Guv’s move of unilaterally forming the search committee.
The tenure of the incumbent, V P Mahadevan Pillai, will expire soon, on October 24.
The Priya Varghese-Kannur University row is just one in a series of instances where people close to the ruling party, the CPM, are seen landing plum posts in varsities.
Earlier, in 2010, when the Senate tried to pass a resolution against then Governor RS Gavai, VC A Jaykrishnan put a stop to it.
Even as he welcomed criticisms, Arif Mohammed Khan said the legality of the resolution needs to be verified.
If it is found that the vice-chancellor has erred, Pillai could see suspension or worse yet, expulsion.
In what may lead to yet another stand-off, the selection of a Senate representative for the appointment of VC to University of Kerala has been omitted from the agenda.
Governor Khan has exercised his powers to constitute a search committee for the appointment for Kerala University's next VC.
As per the proposed amendment, the Governor would have no free say and could only nominate the representative proposed by the government.
