Perumbavur: The Perumbavur town is set to shine brighter under the ‘Vettam’ project, conceived by the municipality to enhance public safety and improve civic facilities. With the project nearing completion, 5,000 new 36-watt LED bulbs are set to turn Perumbavur’s nights almost as bright as day.
As part of the initiative, old sodium vapour lamps, bulbs and tube lights have been fully replaced. Many of these lights had remained non-functional for months due to a shortage of spare parts and delays in fulfilling contractual obligations. Now, with the Vettam project in place, faulty lights will be repaired and restored within weeks. A dedicated service team has been stationed at the municipality for round-the-clock maintenance. The new LED lights also come with a three-year warranty.
Replacing sodium vapour lamps with LED technology has helped reduce power consumption. High-capacity 90-watt LED lights have been installed at Kalady Junction, on the medians between the Mahatma Gandhi statue and Perumbavur Girls Higher Secondary School and on electric posts installed by KSTP along the Angamaly-Muvattupuzha Road. These were set up using advertisement revenue, thereby sparing municipal funds.
Four high-mast lights in the town too are being restored and maintenance work is underway on 30 mini-mast lights. With this, all major roads, junctions and public spaces in Perumbavur will now be better illuminated.
The project, implemented at an investment of Rs 1.30 crore, will address the shortage of street lighting in the town while improving traffic flow and ensuring greater public safety, said municipal chairman Paul Pathikkal.
