Kottayam: The people who visited the East Police Station in Kottayam town from morning to evening on Tuesday to file complaints and other purposes were stunned on witnessing a fully decked-up tusker on the premises. They were also thrilled when the elephant waved its trunks and trumpeted.

The loud trumpets also shook employees of the District Collectorate located near the police station. However, on closer examination, the visitors realised that the six-foot-tall elephant was an electrical device.

The electric tusker was brought to the East station by K P Bibin, a civil police officer working there. The elephant was created by Bibin’s father-in-law, Kanakambaran (75), a resident of Puravelil, Vaikom. Incidentally, both Bibin and Kanakambaran are elephant lovers. Station house officer U Sreejith had permitted to bring the electric elephant when the employees decided to celebrate Onam in the police station.

Several contests and other events were organised at the station as part of the celebrations. Among the highlights was a ‘thiruvathirakali’ performance staged by the women police officers. All the 68 police officers working at the station and their family members later took part in ‘onasadya’, the traditional feast. Earlier, District Police Chief A Shahul Hameed inaugurated the celebrations.
