Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader V D Satheesan on Wednesday announced that the UDF will decide on participating in the Global Ayyappa Sangamam being organised by the Devaswom Board only after the state government answers a few pertinent questions. The government needs to clarify if it would revise the affidavit favouring women's entry into Sabarimala temple.
Speaking to the media, Satheesan accused the state government of using the event as a political tool to garner votes ahead of the upcoming elections. "The Pinarayi government has done nothing for the development of Sabarimala over the last nine years. It is clear why they are organising the Ayyappa Sangamam now, just before elections. Anyone can see through their double standards," Satheesan said.
Earlier, AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal stated that Ayyappa Sangamam was a ploy by the CPM to appease devotees and that the government has a history of betraying believers.
Satheesan also criticised the government for going ahead with the event without withdrawing cases filed against those who participated in the protests against the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple. "Will the government withdraw the cases against the protestors?" he asked. He further alleged that funds meant for local body development are being diverted to organise the event.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the Global Ayyappa Sangamam in Pampa on September 20. Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) chairman PS Prasanth said that the budget for the event has not yet been finalised, as several committees are still being formed and arrangements are underway.
