Thrissur: Vigilance officials on Thursday arrested Irinjalakuda Excise Inspector N Shankar for allegedly extorting money from local bars. Acting on a tip-off, officials intercepted his vehicle at Chirangara, where they recovered ₹50,000 in cash and seven liquor bottles.

According to officials, the Thiruvananthapuram native regularly collected money from bar owners while travelling home on leave. Shankar failed to provide documents proving the source of the seized cash, which is suspected to be “monthly collection” from bars.

Vigilance officials confirmed that departmental action would be recommended against him. The raid was led by DySP Jim Paul, assisted by officers Jayesh Balan, Saiju Soman, Bibish K B, Sibin, Ratheesh, SI Selvakumar, and Muhammed Siyad.
