Chengannur: Passengers waiting at Cheriyanad station were in for a surprise on Thursday evening when a train breezed past them and then reversed to the platform to let them in.
The incident occurred at 6:53 pm on Thursday, when the Nagercoil–Kottayam passenger train overshot the Cheriyanad station, where several passengers were waiting to board. The train went nearly 600 meters ahead, stopping only at Mamballipadi, before reversing back to Cheriyanad to allow passengers to board.
Railway officials later attributed the unusual incident either to the inexperience of the loco pilot, shortage of staff, or the absence of a proper signalling system at Cheriyanad, which is a halt station.
Security lapses have been increasingly reported from railway stations in Kerala in recent times. A youth on September 2 rode on a premium bike along the second platform of Ernakulam Town (North) railway station, speeding past passengers awaiting trains.
