Kochi: A doctor was arrested in Kochi on Tuesday after police recovered 0.83 grams of MDMA from him. The accused, identified as Amjad Ahasan (30) from Vadakkekara in North Paravur, was detained by the DANSAF anti-narcotics squad during an operation in Ernakulam North.
Police said the operation was led by Narcotics Cell Assistant Commissioner K A Abdulsalam on the instructions of City Police Commissioner Putta Vimaladitya. Ahasan had studied medicine in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ernakulam General Hospital issued a clarification on Tuesday, rejecting media reports that a serving doctor of the hospital was caught with narcotics. “The person mentioned in the news has never been employed at this hospital. He was associated with the COVID call centre during 2019–20 and is known to have worked at a private hospital in the city. The hospital has no connection with the call centre’s activities or appointments,” Superintendent of the hospital said in a statement.
The hospital added that such “misleading reports only serve to defame this institution and demoralise its employees” and urged media outlets to withdraw the “defamatory news”.
