Mariyappally: Having languished in neglect for decades, a knowledge hub is finally being brought back to life at the age of 77. A group of reading enthusiasts has renovated the building that houses the Mahatmaji Memorial Library, located near the Museum of Letters in Mariyappally on the MC Road.

The Mahatmaji Memorial Library was originally established in 1948. In 1963, then Chief Minister R Shankar laid the foundation stone for a new building. Over time, however, the library ceased operations and the building fell into a state of near collapse. The renovation activity now is spearheaded by the Nattakom People’s Collective.

Under the Mission Library-2025 project, the first phase of the renovation was completed this April. With the support of many, including NRIs, local firms and the public, the library has now been fully restored.

Minister V N Vasavan will inaugurate the renovated library at 5.30 pm on September 13 at a function on the premises of the Museum of Letters. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA, will be the chief guest, and K Francis George, MP, will release the library logo. Library president V P Lalu will preside over the event. The office-bearers are V P Lalu (President), S S Shanavas (Vice President), Shiji Lal (Secretary) and Prakashini Prasannan (Joint Secretary).
