Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is set to revise the question paper format for the learner's licence test from October 1, 2025.

At present, candidates face 20 multiple-choice questions in the online test, with 15 seconds allowed per question. A minimum of 12 correct answers (60 per cent) is required to pass. Under the new system, the number of questions will rise to 30, with 30 seconds allotted for each. The qualifying mark will remain at 60 per cent, meaning candidates must answer at least 18 questions correctly.

The syllabus for the test is available on the newly launched MVD LEADS mobile app, which also offers practice and mock tests. Those who clear different levels on the app will be issued road safety certificates. This certificate exempts candidates from attending the mandatory pre-learners road safety class during the 30-day licence period before the track and road tests.

Students can also use the app to avail concession travel in KSRTC and private buses by displaying a scannable QR code to conductors.

The department has further decided to make certification through the app mandatory for driving school instructors to continue holding their instructor licence. All MVD staff members must also clear the road safety certificate test, with results reflected in their annual performance reports and service benefits.
