Thrissur: After years of disputes, protests and a prolonged legal battle, K S Anurag from Cherthala formally assumed charge as kazhagam staff at the Koodalmanikyam temple on Sunday, becoming the first person from the Ezhava community to hold the post.

Anurag received his appointment order via speed post and reported for duty at 4 pm, accompanied by his parents, Sunesh and Sheeba, as well as supporters and representatives from various socio-political organisations. “This has been a long wait. I thank everyone who stood by me during the struggle,” he said.

The temple had previously faced controversy when Balu, from Aryanadu in Thiruvananthapuram, became the first non-savarna appointed through the Kerala Devaswom Recruitment Board (KDRB). His appointment drew opposition from sections of the Warrier community, who claimed hereditary rights to the kazhagam post. Facing caste-based discrimination and legal challenges, Balu was forced to step aside, sparking widespread protests and court proceedings.

Opponents, led by local resident T V Harikrishnan and community groups, argued before the Kerala High Court that the kazhagam role was their traditional preserve. Progressive organisations, rights activists and political groups, however, rallied for inclusivity and justice.

The Kerala government backed the appointments, but the matter remained tied up in court until last week, when the High Court cleared the way for Anurag’s entry. The Devaswom Board then held an emergency meeting to finalise the procedures.
