Idukki: Two workers were killed in a landslip at a resort construction site in Chithirapuram near Anachal on Wednesday evening.

The victims were identified as Rajeevan of Shankuppadi, Anachal, and Benny of Bison Valley. The incident occurred around 4 pm while soil was being excavated for a protective wall. A mound of earth from a higher elevation suddenly gave way, trapping the workers under the debris.

Several others who were present at the site managed to escape unhurt. Rescue operations were launched immediately using a JCB, and fire and rescue units from Munnar and Adimali joined the efforts. One body was recovered first, badly mangled in the collapse, and the second after an extensive search.

The area had been experiencing light showers since morning, which officials suspect may have triggered the landslip.

Authorities revealed that both the local panchayat and the revenue department had earlier issued a stop memo against the resort construction. Despite this, work allegedly continued in violation of the order. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the accident and possible lapses in safety compliance.
