Kaduthuruthy: Residents of Thekkupuram miraculously rescued an infant who was thrown into a stream. Ambika (33), the mother of the newborn, was crossing a wooden bridge across the stream carrying the baby when her leg got stuck after the bridge collapsed.
The strong currents in the water carried the baby for over 150 metres. The incident occurred at around 5 pm on Thursday in Ward One at Thekkupuram–Mallissery Road.
Ambika and her husband, Manjoor Iravimangalam Njarakkattil Jomon Mathew, got their baby back due to the timely intervention of their neighbours, Salim Kumar and Joby. Ambika and the baby were returning to Manjoor from her house at Varissery. The two were crossing the wooden bridge across the Ganapathithodu stream to reach their house. They had been dropped near the bridge in a car.
The bridge, which is in a dilapidated condition, was built using two coconut-wood planks that are now almost decayed. It broke when Ambika reached the middle, causing her leg to get stuck between the planks.
The stream was deep and had strong currents. Salim Kumar and Joby, who were in the vicinity, rushed to the spot on hearing Ambika’s cries. They quickly jumped into the water and saved the baby. Ambika and the baby are currently undergoing treatment at Muttuchira HGM Hospital.
