Potta: The Thanipara Lift Irrigation project, a long-cherished dream of the local residents in Potta, is poised to become a reality. The project aims to supply water from the Thanipara quarry for agricultural purposes to farmers in the First Ward, the highest region in Chalakudy, and for the drinking water needs of the locals.

An additional ₹20 lakh has been sanctioned for this project from the Asset Development Fund of MLA Saneesh Kumar Joseph. With the inclusion of ₹17 lakh from the municipality, the project is being realized at a total cost of ₹37 lakh. MLA Saneesh Kumar Joseph inaugurated the pipe laying function. Municipal Chairperson Shibu Valappan presided over the event.

Municipal Councilors Gigi Johnson and Aby George, former Municipal Councilors V.L. Johnson and Selina Jacob, Cooperative Bank Director Joy Maliyekkal, and Joy Kokkadan delivered speeches.

In Poyya, around 20 kilometres away from Potta, work has commenced for establishing a well and pump house near the Kundoor Kadavu Boat Jetty in Kuzhoor Panchayat. A well with a 6-metre diametre and 15-metre depth, along with a pump house and two 40 HP motors, will be constructed here. Additionally, a pipe will be laid to transport water to a treatment plant within a 6-kilometre radius. This project aims to bring and distribute water from the Chalakudy River to Poyya Panchayat, which includes many areas facing the threat of saltwater intrusion. The project is being implemented at a cost of 8 crore rupees under the Central Government's Nagarasanjaya scheme.

The pipeline carrying water to Poyya is being installed along the Kundoor-Kochukadavu Road, which includes three wards of Kuzhoor Panchayat. The contract concerning this was exchanged between both panchayats in July last year. Approximately 1.5 kilometres of pipe needs to be laid through Kuzhoor Panchayat.

All these details have been specified in the contract. Although discussions to bring drinking water from the Chalakudy River to Poyya have been ongoing for decades, concrete actions are being taken now.
