The District Crime Branch will probe the suicide of police trainee, Anand A, 24. He was found hanging in the barrack at the Special Armed Police (SAP), Peroorkada on September 18. Thiruvananthapuram Commissioner Thomson Jose said that the case has been handed over to the Crime Branch for further investigation.
Peroorkada police have registered a case of unnatural death following the incident. The police said that they have received a complaint from the brother saying that there should be a probe into the circumstances which led to his suicide. The police have not added any other sections and have collected statements from the family members.
Meanwhile, DCP VIP Security, Dr Arul RB Krishna, who holds the additional charge of Armed police Battalion DIG, has sought a report from the SAP Commandant on complaints raised by Anandu's brother regarding harassment during training in the camp. He also gave a report to the ADGP on September 20 regarding an earlier incident when Anand slashed his wrists in a suicide bid.
His family has said that two days before he committed suicide, Anand had cut his wrists. Though camp officials told the family that it was not serious, they later learnt that he required multiple stitches. His brother, Aravind, has said that when they visited him at the camp, he was wearing a full-sleeve shirt, buttoned up. "We were not able to see his wounds. When urged to take leave, he insisted he would be fine. He was clearly hiding something, maybe out of fear,” said Aravind.
DIG Battalion ordered a probe into this incident and a report was submitted by the SP, Kerala Armed Women Police Battalion. It is understood that the report ruled out any procedural violations in taking care of Anand. "As per his request, he was given barrack rest. Two havaldars were assigned to stay with him. He was given counselling. The doctor who checked on him reported there were no signs of clinical depression. He appeared to be under stress, though. This may be because he returned from his home a week ago. Considering the complaints of harassment in the camp, a separate probe has been ordered," an official said.
The Commandant SAP will collect the statements of Anand's family and other officials as part of the probe. Meanwhile, Anand’s family is planning to submit complaints to the Chief Minister and top police officials.
