Kunnamkulam: A man convicted of sexually assaulting a minor girl was sentenced to 63 years of rigorous imprisonment. The Kunnamkulam POCSO Court also fined 61-year-old Abubakker ₹3.15 lakh. The court ordered the convict to pay the fine amount to the survivor.

Abubakker sexually assaulted the survivor in July 2024. He told her that he was a 'Kuthu Ratheeb' (a religious ritual practised by some Sufi Muslims in Kerala) performer and that he carried a knife. He threatened her that he would stab her if she revealed the incident. Intimidated by these threats, the girl did not inform her family.

Later, her classmates noticed the changes in her behaviour and she confided in them. The students subsequently informed the school principal, who then alerted the Kunnamkulam Police.

Based on the statement recorded by ASI Anitha, a case was registered by then Kunnamkulam Inspector UK Shajahan.
